Protection Officer (P)

About the role

The Protection Officer will be based in Cameroon, supporting the Global Assisted Voluntary Return (AVR) programme. Reporting to the Chief of Mission and working closely with senior program advisors, the role focuses on protection assessments, risk mitigation, and ensuring safe, dignified returns for migrants.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct protection assessments and identify risk mitigation strategies across operational settings, shelter conditions, legal frameworks, and vulnerable groups, integrating gender and PSEAH considerations.
• Apply the Return and Reintegration Due Diligence Process, escalating complex protection and legal issues while maintaining gender‑sensitive analysis.
• Provide technical guidance and day‑to‑day support to national and international protection staff, ensuring adherence to IOM protection policies and standards.
• Prepare technical briefings and updates for senior management and government counterparts, maintaining high‑level liaison under the authority of the Chief of Mission.
• Coordinate with IOM missions in countries of origin to facilitate remote counselling, protection assessments, and case follow‑up.
• Liaise with consular authorities to assist with documentation, family tracing, and reunification efforts.

Required profile

• Proven experience in protection assessments, migration, or humanitarian programmes.
• Strong knowledge of gender‑sensitive analysis, PSEAH principles, and legal frameworks related to migration.
• Ability to work collaboratively with government agencies, NGOs, and private sector partners.
• Excellent communication and briefing skills for senior‑level and political audiences.
