About the role

The Human Resources Specialist Trainee 1 supports the HR team of the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. This entry‑level position provides exposure to reasonable accommodation processes, employee assistance programs, and various HR administrative functions.

Key responsibilities

• Act as the Agency’s Designee of Reasonable Accommodation (DRA), reviewing requests and determining appropriateness.
• Research disabilities, technologies, and related policies to ensure compliance.
• Coordinate with the employee benefits team on leave of absence issues, including Family Medical Leave.
• Communicate with medical offices regarding confidential employee health information.
• Maintain a SharePoint/Excel tracker for accommodation requests and approved equipment inventory.
• Monitor a shared mailbox, respond to inquiries, and keep records up to date.
• Serve as backup Domestic Violence Agency Liaison, providing resources such as EAP and OPDV.
• Assist in preparing workplace safety plans and support career fairs or community events as needed.
• Use multiple computer systems, prioritize assignments, and uphold confidentiality and good judgment.

Required profile

• Eligibility for appointment under Civil Service Law and related regulations.
• Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Adherence to department time‑and‑attendance policies.

Required skills

• Advanced Excel skills.
