Consultant Medical Director – Ophthalmology & Eye Centre Development Advisor

About the role

We are launching a state‑of‑the‑art Ophthalmology and Vision Centre in Douala, Cameroon, and need an internationally experienced ophthalmologist to act as Consultant Medical Director and Eye Centre Development Advisor. The role will guide the project from planning through commissioning and the early operational phase, shaping clinical strategy and ensuring world‑class patient care.

Key responsibilities

• Advise on design, service portfolio, and growth strategy for a comprehensive reference eye hospital.
• Define operational standards, policies, protocols and quality‑assurance systems.
• Assess, specify and procure diagnostic and surgical ophthalmic equipment; support installation and validation.
• Develop clinical departments such as General Ophthalmology, Glaucoma, Cataract & Refractive Surgery, Retina, Cornea, Pediatric Ophthalmology, Neuro‑Ophthalmology, Oculoplastics, Low Vision, Optical Services and Outreach programmes.
• Create staffing plans, recruit specialist ophthalmologists, and attract retired experts and international volunteers.
• Design training programmes, mentorship and CPD initiatives for doctors, nurses, optometrists and technicians.
• Build partnerships with local and international institutions, donors and eye‑health initiatives; promote medical tourism and regional referrals.

Required profile

• Medical degree recognized by an appropriate authority and board certification in Ophthalmology.
• Extensive experience in ophthalmic clinical leadership, eye‑hospital development or large‑scale eye‑care projects.
• Proven track record in equipment procurement, team building and capacity‑building programmes.
• Ability to work collaboratively with NGOs, academic centres and donor agencies.
