Full-Stack Scientific Application Developer

About the role

The Scientific Data Management and Usable Data Systems group at Berkeley Lab is seeking a Full-Stack Scientific Application Developer to create user‑facing scientific applications, back‑end services, and data tools for the DOE Office of Science community. You will work closely with scientists, engineers, and UX practitioners to deliver reliable software that accelerates scientific discovery.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement user‑friendly scientific interfaces using maintainable frameworks informed by UX research.
• Develop software tools and workflows that incorporate modern algorithms and best‑practice engineering principles.
• Leverage AI/ML tools to enhance development processes and scientific applications.
• Create tests, documentation, and deployment pipelines; optimize, debug, and maintain production software.
• Use modern DevOps, release‑management, and collaboration tools.
• Analyze and solve complex technical problems, selecting appropriate methods and solutions.
• Engage with internal and external experts to share knowledge and advance project goals.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree with 5 years of related experience, or Master’s degree with 3 years, or an equivalent combination.
• Familiarity with command‑line and system‑administration tools on UNIX‑based operating systems (Linux or macOS).
• Proficiency in Python and TypeScript/JavaScript.
