Associate Attorney - Family Law & Criminal Defense

About the role

Pilcher Law Firm is looking for an energetic, self‑starter to join our team as an Associate Attorney focusing on family law and criminal defense. This entry‑level position offers exposure to a diverse caseload and the opportunity to develop litigation and client‑service skills.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a docket that includes divorce, paternity, custody and visitation modifications, spousal and child support, adoption, protection orders, and guardianship matters.
• Conduct legal research using Westlaw, the South Dakota Legislative Research Council, the Unified Judicial System, and the Legal Information Institute.
• Prepare pleadings, motions, briefs, and other court documents.
• Communicate with clients, opposing counsel, and court personnel.
• Assist senior attorneys with trial preparation and case strategy.

Required profile

• Licensed to practice law by the South Dakota Supreme Court.
• 0‑3 years of professional legal experience.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Detail‑oriented and able to work independently.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.
• Experience using computer‑based case management software.
• Competence in Westlaw legal research.
• Familiarity with public legal research portals such as the South Dakota Legislative Research Council, Unified Judicial System, and LII.
